The venue: LANXESS Arena
The LANXESS Arena (Willy-Brandt-Platz 3, 50679 Cologne) is the host venue for the Cologne Major playoff stage from June 17–21, 2026. It is one of Europe's largest indoor arenas, with a maximum spectator capacity of around 20,000 in concert configuration — though for the Major it is typically configured for ~15,000 seated. The arena has hosted IEM Cologne for over a decade and is colloquially known among Counter-Strike fans as the "Cathedral of Counter-Strike."
Earlier stages of the event (the Opening Stage from June 2–8 and the Elimination Stage from June 10–16) take place at the official ESL studios in Cologne, which are not open to general spectators. Match content from those stages is broadcast online; on-site attendance is for media, talent, and players only.
Getting to Cologne
By air
Cologne/Bonn Airport (CGN) is the closest airport, located about 15 km southeast of the city centre. From the airport, the S-Bahn S19 reaches Köln Hauptbahnhof (Cologne Central Station) in roughly 15 minutes, with services every 20 minutes throughout the day. A taxi covers the same trip in 20–25 minutes for €30–40.
Düsseldorf Airport (DUS) is a larger international hub roughly 50 km north. Hourly direct trains (Regional-Express RE6 and ICE) connect DUS to Köln Hauptbahnhof in 40–60 minutes. Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is a longer ride — 90 minutes by ICE — but offers the widest international flight network if you are flying intercontinental.
By train
Köln Hauptbahnhof is one of the busiest rail stations in Germany and is served by ICE and Eurostar high-speed trains directly from Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, and Munich. Brussels–Cologne takes around 1h45m on the ICE; Paris–Cologne is 3h15m direct. Booking a German Rail (DB) saver fare 2–3 weeks in advance typically costs less than the equivalent flight plus airport transfer.
Getting from the city to LANXESS Arena
The arena sits in Deutz, on the right bank of the Rhine directly across from the Old Town and Cologne Cathedral. From Köln Hauptbahnhof you have three reasonable options:
- Walking — 20–25 minutes across the Hohenzollernbrücke (the famous "love-lock bridge") with a great view of the cathedral. Highly recommended in fair weather.
- S-Bahn — one stop on the S6, S11, S12, S13, or S19 from Köln Hauptbahnhof to Köln Messe/Deutz; the arena is a 5-minute walk from there.
- Tram — line 1 from Heumarkt or line 3/9 stops at Bahnhof Deutz/LANXESS Arena, directly outside the arena entrance.
A standard short-trip ticket (KurzstreckenTicket) costs €2.20 (2026 KVB pricing); a single regular ticket is €3.40. If you plan to use public transport more than three times in a day, the day ticket (TagesTicket 1Person, €8.10) pays for itself quickly.
Where to stay
Three areas are most convenient for matchday access:
- Deutz — same side of the Rhine as the arena. Walking distance to LANXESS, quieter at night, mid-range hotels. Best if you want to avoid public transport on matchdays.
- Altstadt-Nord (Old Town North) — around the cathedral and Köln Hauptbahnhof. Most restaurants, bars, and tourist attractions. 20-minute walk or one S-Bahn stop to the arena. Higher hotel prices.
- Belgisches Viertel — west of the city centre, the trendy district with bars and independent restaurants. Two tram stops to the arena. Best for nightlife.
Cologne is a major trade-fair city; hotel prices fluctuate dramatically with the Messe schedule. For peak Major weekend (June 19–21), expect a 50–100% premium over weekday rates. Booking 8+ weeks in advance is strongly advised.
Matchday logistics
Doors typically open 90 minutes before the first scheduled match. Bag policy at LANXESS Arena allows small bags (under A4 size); larger bags must be checked. Professional cameras are not permitted without media accreditation; phones and small mirrorless cameras are fine for personal use.
Food and drink inside the arena is operated by ARAMARK at standard event-venue pricing — beer, currywurst, and pretzels are reliable; expect a queue during breaks. The arena is fully cashless: card or contactless mobile payment only.
Kölsch, the local 0.2L pale beer specific to Cologne, is universally available in the surrounding district and is the traditional matchday drink. Brauhaus Päffgen, Brauhaus Sion, and Früh am Dom are three of the well-known Kölsch breweries within a short walk of the cathedral.
Tickets
All tickets for the playoff stage are sold via the official ESL ticket store on vivenu — see the official ticket page. We are a fan site and do not resell tickets. If a third party offers tickets at face value or above, verify the source carefully — secondary-market resale can be subject to ESL's anti-resale provisions.
Side trips
If you have a day to spare around the Major, three options are worth considering. The Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is directly opposite Köln Hauptbahnhof; entry is free, the south tower climb (533 steps) is €5 and gives the best view of the city. The Roman-Germanic Museum and Museum Ludwig are next to the cathedral and cover Roman Cologne and 20th-century art respectively. Düsseldorf is 30 minutes by train and famously rivals Cologne over Altbier vs. Kölsch — a trip worth making if you have a free morning.
